Chasing the Goodness

“Coffee, the favorite drink of the civilized world.”

Thomas Jefferson

I crave coffee in the mornings. So, my path to the coffeemaker is direct after I wake up and stop at the loo (as the wankers across the pond call it). The first pot of the Rocket Fuel is glorious.

But the daily dilemma arises when no liquid is left after a few cups.

“Shall I make a second pot?

The answer to this question is a no-brainer for those not gripped by the addiction to morning caffeine. And I know I should not brew a second pot. Such levels of caffeine are no bueno for a healthy boy.

I respond (correctly) in the negative on most days. But sometimes, like today, I cave to the goodness of the Java. Disappointment inevitably ensues.

Why is the second pot of coffee never ever as yumm as the first? The better question is, Why do I continue to brew seconds, knowing the letdown will follow?

Fortunately, in less than 24 hours, I will prepare a fresh batch of the first-pot-perfection. And I won’t delude myself into believing the myth of second-pot tastiness.
