Look again.

It is Saturday night, and I am sitting at my computer as I think about the opening statement for my first jury trial, which is scheduled for Wednesday.  The case is not particularly momentous [though it is to the client].  Nonetheless, I am pumped.

I reflect on this past week at work.  An important lesson was learned: there may be a worthwhile argument in what initially appears even the most dismal scenarios.  And though our client may not win the day, he will have received the utmost effort in the drafting and arguing of our motion.

Last week, one of my handful of clients said to me, “You know, I want to thank you.  When we first met, I asked you to get me something better than a 5-10.  You most certainly did that.  I want you to know I appreciate it.”

My man has been incarcerated for 3 years- most of that time being spent in the hole.  That he had the mind to think and express his thanks nearly knocked me out of the desk chair.

I work as a criminal defense attorney because I have a genuine impact on others’ lives.  I dig that.
