Overreaction

Disclaimer: I do not know the first thing about the safety of nuclear power.  I am not a nuclear power honk or a Saudi oil prince.

The disaster in Japan has spawned a lot of talk in the media about nuclear power.  Some are calling for an immediate moratorium on any plans to construct new plants.

All of these questions about the safety of nuclear power are the result of Japanese plants’ stability after an earthquake of magnitude 8.9.  Right- not a terrorist attack, or an attempted break-in, or an employee’s mistake- a cataclysmic natural disaster.  The folks at CNN and other networks must take a deep breath.  It was these same kooks, who were pushing for the expansion of nuclear power after the explosion of the oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico.  ‘Stop drilling!  Build nuclear power plants…’ was the outcry.

I know; America will stop drilling for oil.  However, the U.S. cannot rely on the Middle East for oil, given all of the social turmoil in that region.  Allegedly, nuclear power is not safe enough to continue the construction of new plants.  So, park your cars, we’ll all walk to work, school, and grandma’s house.  That will be fine, up until someone gets zapped w/ lighting or strokes out from the heat.  Then, Wolf Blitzer will be hyping up the dangers of stepping outside.
