A Random Act of Kindness

It is freaking freezing in Philadelphia.

I stood outside the grocery store yesterday morning, waiting for my girlfriend to meet me. An older gentleman stepped out of his car parked at the curb a few feet from where I stood. I greeted him, “Good morning.” The man, dressed in an overcoat and top hat, replied, “It’s cold out here.” I concurred.

He approached me and said, “You look like you could use a cup of coffee.” I’d never refuse the black gold but confessed, “I just finished an entire pot.” The nan reached into his pocket and handed me a prayer card with four dollar bills tucked inside. “Deacon Pleasant” was written at the bottom. “Get yourself another cup on me.” He then walked into the supermarket.

I was reading the card when the man (deacon?) returned to his vehicle. I smiled, thanked him, and told him that the day before, I mentioned that I wanted to read the Bible. He popped his trunk and handed me a Bible, warning, “The print is small. Make sure you’re wearing your glasses.” I thanked him again, and he drove away.

I’m annoyed I did not have the courtesy/awareness to ask the name of this generous stranger. His random act of kindness made my day.
